Description :

It is a broad spectrum antibioticused in veterinary medicine to treat animals afflicted with certain bacterialinfections. This drug belongs to a class of antibiotics known asfluoroquinolones and is not effective against infections caused by viruses,fungi or parasites.

Treating Infections:

Enrofloxacin works by inhibiting the process of DNA synthesis within thebacterial cells, which results in cell death. This drug is commonly used totreat a range of bacterial infections, including those of the skin, urinarytract and respiratory system, as well as infections that result from wounds.


Enrofloxacin is availableunder the brand name Baytril®, in addition to a variety of generic formulationsthat can be compounded by a qualified veterinary pharmacy. Formulations includeoral tablet, capsule, suspension, transdermal gel, topical cream or ointment,otic solution or injectable solution. Enrofloxacin is only available with aprescription.

Precautions :

Enrofloxacin is generallysafe and effective for use in veterinary medicine. However, it should not beadministered to puppies aged 28 weeks or younger. It should be used withcaution in veterinary patients prone to seizures. Doses may also need to beadjusted for patients with severe kidney or liver impairment. This medicationshould not be administered to an animal with a known allergy orhypersensitivity to it or other medications in the same class (marbofloxacin,ciprofloxacin, etc).

Interactions and Possible Side Effects:

Enrofloxacin may interactwith one or more medications. Common culprits include iron supplements,antacids and stomach protectants. When given to animals, avoid giving withdairy products (such as cheese, cream cheese, or yogurt) because the calciumcan bind to the drug, limiting its effectiveness. Disclosing the existing drugregimen of your pet is essential in order to prevent a possible druginteraction. This medication may cause some animal patients to experience certainside effects, generally diarrhea or loose stools. On very rare occasions, ananimal may experience a seizure, while younger animals may experience swollenjoints, general lethargy and in some cases, cartilage damage when dosed abovethe recommended range and below the recommended age.
