This medication is used to prevent and relieve painduring certain medical procedures (such as inserting a tube into the urinarytract). It is also used to numb the lining of the mouth, throat, or nose beforecertain medical procedures (such as intubation). Lidocaine jelly is also used to relieve pain caused by swelling of the urinary tract (urethritis). It worksby numbing certain areas of the body that are moist. Lidocaine belongs to aclass of drugs known as local anesthetics.
Mild nausea, stinging, swelling, or burning mayoccur. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor orpharmacist promptly.
Before using lidocaine, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to other anesthetics (such asbupivacaine, prilocaine); or to PABA; or if you have any other allergies. Thisproduct may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.
